Judging on style, grape, color, vintage and price, many German wines received the Silver award in the 2017 Decanter World Wine Awards.

The heavy summer rainfall caused plenty of vineyard related problems problems. Despite this, German wines in 2016 turned out to be one of the best for German wineries.

The German Wines of 2016:

Weingut Eifel-Pfeiffer Estate Collection Riesling, Auslese, Mosel

The Weingut Eifel-Pfeiffer Estate Collection Riesling, has an alcohol content percentage of 8.0-9.0%. It is a  light-bodied German wine with 45 grams per liter residual sugar. The wine is fruity with hints of tropical fruit, grapefruit and peach aromas.

This wine is 100% Riesling grape, a light-skinned and aromatic grape. The Riesling grape is thought to be the finest white wine grape in the world. The Estate Collection Riesling is from the Mosel region. Mosel is one of the best regions for growing Riesling due to its terroir. The wine scored 91 points at the Decanter World Wines Awards.

The Vitis Projekt Edition Fritz Keller Weisser Burgunder, scored 90 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2017.

Zwölberich Cuvee Anna Feinherb Riesling, Nahe

A medium-bodied dry wine with 5-18 grams per liter residual sugar. The Cuvee Anna Feinherb Riesling is truly a German wine, made using 100% Riesling and has an alcohol content percentage of 11.5. The wine has a tropical fruit basket wine flavor with sweet acidity and freshness.

The Cuvee Anna Feinherb Riesling is from the Nahe region. This is a region famed for producing delicate Riesling wines that have a touch of light spiciness. The wine attained 91 points at the Decanter World Wines Awards. It received the Silver medal at the Organic Masters 2017 and scored 88 points at 2017 Best of Riesling Awards.

Zwölberich Genesis Langenlonsheimer Löhrer Berg Riesling, Kabinett, Trocken, Nahe

This wine has crisp acidity and refreshing flavor with hints of citrus and pomegranate. The Genesis Langenlonsheimer Löhrer Berg Riesling, is a medium-bodied dry wine, with 5-18 grams per liter residual sugars. The alcohol content percentage is 11.5  in this 100% Riesling grape wine.

In 2017 at the Decanter World Wine Awards, this wine gained 90 points. During 2017 Best of Riesling Awards, the wine got 88 points. Like the Cuvee Anna Feinherb and the Genesis Riesling, this wine is from the Nahe region. This is truly one of the best German wines of 2016!

Weingut Bernhard Mehrlein, Riesling Gentleman Trocken, Rheingau

It is a medium-bodied, dry wine with 5-18 grams per liter residual sugars. The wine is made from 100% Riesling grape with an alcohol content percentage of 12.0. This wine is elegant, rich and fruity. Its flavor has hints of pineapple, passion fruit and lemon zest.  The Riesling Gentleman Trocken scored 90 points at the Decanter World Wines Awards in 2017. It received the Gold medal at the Berlin Wine Trophy 2017 and a Silver medal at the Mundus Vini in 2017. Among German wines, this is a standout!

The German wine is from the Rheingau region. A small but important wine-growing region in Germany. The region is famous for producing Riesling wine that is rich in flavor, has pronounced acidity and spicy fragrance. The luxurious botrytized Riesling is from this region. This Riesling is sweet and has exotic flavors such as apricot puree, honey and caramelized mandarin.

Vitis Projekt Edition Fritz Keller Weisser Burgunder, Baden

A full-bodied dry wine with 5 grams and below per liter residual sugar. This wine has fresh–tasting flavors with hints of pear and lemon zest. The wine is from the Pinot Gris grape. It has an alcohol content percentage of 13.0.

The Vitis Projekt Edition Fritz Keller Weisser Burgunder, scored 90 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2017. The Pinot Gris grape grows in the Baden region of Germany, the warmest wine growing region of the country. The sunny, dry climate is perfect for producing ripe, full-bodied examples of Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris). Vitis Projekt Edition Fritz Keller Weisser Burgunder is another highlight among German wines of 2016.

Martin Waßmer Markgräflerland Sauvignon Blanc, Baden

This is a full-bodied dry wine, with residual sugar of less than 5 grams. Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grape, this wine is elegant and fresh. The alcohol content percentage in this wine is  12.5. The flavor has hints of citrus fruits and fresh herbs with a hint of sweetness.

Similar to the Vitis Projekt Edition Fritz Keller Weisser Burgunder, this wine is from the Baden region. In the 2017 Decanter World Wines Awards, the wine attained 90 points.

Fritz Waßmer Sauvignon Blanc, Baden

This is a full-bodied dry wine with 5 grams per liter residual sugars. The alcohol percentage is 12.5, and it is 100%, Sauvignon Blanc. The wine is fruity with hints of passionfruit, guava and grapefruit with an undertone of acidity.

The Fritz Waßmer Sauvignon Blanc, is also from Baden. In the 2017 Decanter World Wines Awards, the wine scored 90 points.

The top 2016 wines are synonymous with crispness, elegance and subtle aromas in the dry and off-dry vintage whites.
